“What?” Fear and adrenalin hit Penny’s system like a plane flying at Mach one. She shot off the sofa in a panic, her body overriding her brain with the fight or flight response. There was no fighting Jimmy, she’d learnt that to her cost, so it skipped fight and went straight to run like fucking hell. She stopped, turning one way, then the other, in confusion. She wanted to run, but couldn’t. As much as she wanted to, she couldn’t just change to wolf and flee into the night. She needed to pack, organise. Be human about it.

“Shit!” She drove a shaky hand through her hair, distress making her movements jerky. “Why didn’t you say something straightaway?”

Her voice was sharp as she grabbed clean clothes from the laundry basket by the chair, and started to drag them on. Ironing be damned. The werewolf equivalent of the Godfather knew where she was. Creased clothes were the least of her worries at the moment.

Cade shrugged, still sprawled full-length on the sofa, hands behind his head. Naked and totally unashamed about it.

“You were in no shape to go anywhere, and we had time. I figure we’re several hours ahead of them, but we need to leave within the hour. Think you can manage that?”

Penny nodded. To stay out of Jimmy’s clutches, she’d dance naked through the middle of town. Leaving in an hour was no problem. At a push, all she needed to do was grab her bag from the kitchen. Her whole life was in that bag—documents, license—and there was no way she could leave without it.

“Hell yeah. I only need half an hour, less if you help.”

She sat to shove her bare feet into tattered sneakers. Pausing for a second as she laced them, she looked up.

“Just why are you helping me? You’ve been outside the pack for years, why get involved? Jimmy would’ve left you alone if you had just… But now, we’re both dead if he catches up with us. Why would you risk it?”

He avoided her gaze as he rolled off the sofa. As a tactic, it worked well. Her attention was immediately hijacked by the grace of his movements, and the sleek glide of powerful muscles under his skin. He grabbed his boxers and jeans from the floor and pulled them on.

“I know Jimmy’s type, and I was in the neighbourhood. Wasn’t any skin off my nose to warn you.” His tone was nonchalant, unconcerned, as he dressed. Leaving the top button of his jeans undone, he scouted about for the rest of his clothing.

She threw his t-shirt over, arching an eyebrow. “You were in the neighbourhood? Yeah, right. Pull the other one mate, it’s got bells on.”

She folded her arms over her chest, ignoring the fact his gaze went right to her cleavage. “In case you hadn’t noticed, this place is in the middle of bloody nowhere. Exactly why I picked it. “Just happened to be in the neighbourhood” doesn’t wash.”

The silence stretched between them as she waited, watching him.
